BRICS Summit in Rio Adopts 126-Point Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance Agenda
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institutions: Ministry of External Affairs; Ministry of Commerce and Industry
At the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 6 July 2025, leaders of the 11 largest emerging economies signed the Joint Declaration titled βStrengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.β
The declaration encompasses 126 commitments spanning global governance reform, finance, health, artificial intelligence, climate change, peace and security, and people-to-people cooperation. These commitments emerged from over 200 preparatory meetings and the launch or reinforcement of numerous cooperation mechanisms to tackle pressing global challenges such as hunger, climate transitions, and technological governance.
The leaders reiterated core principles including mutual respect, democratic multilateralism, and sovereign equality. They underscored the necessity of reforming international institutions to ensure greater representation of emerging and least developed countries - especially from Africa and Latin America - in global decision-making. The agenda also promotes the BRICS strategic partnership across political, economic, and cultural domains to advance peace, inclusive growth, and a reformed multilateral order. India will chair the bloc in 2026, continuing this agenda.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India leverage its upcoming 2026 BRICS chairmanship to translate the Rio Declarationβs comprehensive commitments into actionable bilateral and multilateral frameworks, particularly in governance reform, climate partnerships, AI collaboration, and institutional strengthening?
