BioE3 Policy Completes One Year: Youth Challenge and National Biofoundry Network Launched
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Institution: Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology
Marking the first anniversary of the BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment), the Department of Biotechnology launched two key initiatives: the BioE3 Challenge for Youth and Indiaβs first National Biofoundry Network.
The BioE3 Challenge is designed to engage young innovators in developing biotechnological solutions that address pressing challenges in sustainability, health, and livelihoods. The National Biofoundry Network aims to build a shared ecosystem for research, prototyping, and scale-up of biotech applications, spanning industry and academia.
The BioE3 Policy, introduced in 2024, focuses on linking biotechnology to economic growth, environmental protection, and employment generation. Its first year has seen the roll-out of frameworks to accelerate R&D, foster startups, and align biotechnology with Indiaβs green and industrial priorities. With the new initiatives, the policyβs trajectory moves further toward creating a globally competitive and innovation-driven bioeconomy.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: What indicators should be tracked to ensure BioE3 delivers simultaneously on economy, environment, and employment?
