AI-Powered Bhashini Project Integrates All 22 Scheduled Languages for Digital Inclusion
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 4: Quality Education
Institutions: Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) | Ministry of Education | Ministry of Tribal Affairs
The Union Government is driving a transformative digital inclusion effort by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to support all 22 Scheduled Languages and numerous tribal dialects. Key platforms, including the Bhashini and BharatGen projects, are enabling real-time translation and localized content delivery across vital sectors like governance, education, and healthcare. This strategy is reinforced by the systematic digitization of linguistic data through initiatives like the Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages (SPPEL) and the Sanchika repository, which provide rich datasets for training advanced AI models.
Furthermore, a dedicated AI platform called Adi-Vaani has been launched to facilitate the real-time translation and preservation of tribal languages. This comprehensive technological push ensures that digital services and educational content, like materials on the e-KUMBH portal, are accessible in the citizenβs mother tongue, aligning with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The strategic integration of multilingual AI systems across government platforms marks a foundational step toward eliminating linguistic barriers in public service delivery and education, positioning India as a global leader in inclusive digital transformation and empowering every citizen to participate fully in the digital economy.
What is the Bhashini Platform? β Bhashini (under the National Language Translation Mission) is an AI-driven platform that provides a public repository of language data, models, and tools for real-time translation and content generation in all 22 Scheduled Languages and numerous tribal languages. Its core goal is to create a digital ecosystem that allows seamless, real-time interaction between speakers of different Indian languages and between citizens and digital government services.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How will the government ensure the linguistic accuracy and cultural sensitivity of AI models as they scale to include hundreds of lower-resource tribal languages?
